X Nationalism - Indian and European
In the class tenth the first theme of history, - Events and processes is divided into three chapters, first - The Rise of Nationalism in Europe, Second the Nationalist Movement in Indo china (Deleted), and third is Nationalism in India, nationalism is the keyword in all three chapters.
Due to the different subject matter of the three chapters, it is quite tough to define the word nationalism. in Europe, different sections of society or small states under the empires discovered that they shared different identities so they must be ruled by their own ruler instead of outsiders in Indo-china (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam) people struggled against (french) colonial rule (exploitation and subjugation by other nations), in India people also struggled and started the movement against British rule (colonial rule)
In France, Italy, Germany, and many European countries people started the movement against the monarchy and unified their nations on the basis of race, ethnicity, language, and some rights were also acquired by them. many European nations came into existence due to anti-monarchical movements and some monarchies also merged small monarchies within their to make a nation-state like the unification of Germany and unification of Italy. this process is known as nationalism in Europe. on the other hand countries like India, Vietnam, and many other African countries started movements against colonial rule. all these countries under colonial rule started movements for independence and these movements are called nationalist movements. In India, people of different religions and races started movements for independence and after independence, India became a secular nation with many castes and races with a sense of oneness. this process(phenomenon) is also called nationalism in India.
On the basis of the above theme, there can be many definitions of nationalism, and still nationalism is a strong force for all countries of the world, but in a simple way nationalism is a sense of belongingness or a feeling of belongingness towards one's nation. it is also a desire for self-rule.
